Emiaj Self, a senior at Moore, excels in both the classroom and on the softball field. Self plays shortstop or the Lady Lions and knows what it takes to contribute to the teams success. This year she wants to see her team work together to accomplish their goals. “As a team I’d like to see us work together and make it to the state tournament,” Self said. In previous years playing in the state tournament and traveling to tournaments out of town has been Self’s favorite part of competing on the softball team.

In the classroom, Self is a straight A student and takes classes at the Moore Norman Technology Center to help her pursue interests in science, engineering, and technology. “I’ve been part of the pre-engineering
program through MNTC since my freshman year. I get to work with likeminded people there,” Self said. “My favorite classes have been aerospace engineering, computer science, and physics.” Self has some words of encouragement for other students who, like her, are interested in taking additional classes and earning unique skills or trades. “Don’t let sports or extracurricular activities keep you from exploring your future career path. I’ve met so many people that think like me and my instructors at MNTC are amazing. The classes are worth it.”

Next year Self will continue her softball career at the Colorado School of Mines
where she will also get to study all of her favorite subjects. “I’m looking forward to playing on a softball team full of future engineers,” Self said. “I’ve always been a nerd. The Colorado School of Mines is a prestigious STEM focused school offering a variety of engineering programs. Who doesn’t love Colorado? Go Orediggers!” Self thanks her mom for providing support and inspiration through her adolescence. “She inspires me to do what I love and to be myself and different. She helps me balance a tough school and softball life. She always has my back,” Self said.
