Moore High School’s Maverick Gardner – Football Spotlight – Presented by Gregory’s Sporting Goods

Moore’s Maverick Gardner

By Liz Contreras

If pressure makes diamonds, Moore’s quarterback has been forged under Friday night lights.

Senior signal-caller Maverick Gardner doesn’t just play football; he lives and breathes it. From backyard passes at age five to comeback victories in high-stakes games, he has crafted a reputation for talent, hard work, and a love for sports.

“My dad has been the biggest influence on the field,” he shares. “He’s coached me my entire life.”

This year, he is stepping confidently into his senior season, leading his team as quarterback while continuing to grow in his strength and improve his field awareness. The bonds he built at Moore create a close-knit team environment and valued place to play.

“Moore is a great place to play because . . . they become family,” says Gardner.

For Gardner, the action begins before his cleats hit the turf. In his mind, he is picturing touchdowns, dodging the pressure, and leading the drive.

“I mentally prepare for a game by telling myself what I want to happen in the game,” states Gardner. “And then I visualize it.”

This intense, reflective performance mapping may have played a role in his most memorable game. In a pressure-packed match against Mustang, an injured Gardner stepped in as quarterback and used his vision, speed, and leadership to steer his team to a comeback victory, rushing for 150 yards and proving he could deliver when it mattered most.

“I was not ever 100 percent, but I played with everything I had,” reflects Gardner. “No matter the score, we will give our best and leave it all on the field.”

Outside of football, this multi-sport athlete competes in baseball, basketball, track, and serves on the student council.

“My plans for after graduation are to pursue my dream and play baseball wherever that may be.”

While much has changed since he was first learning to make throws, Maverick Gardner’s unshakeable resolve has only strengthened.

“Mental toughness is how hard you work for something,” he says. “I dig deep for it almost every day.”

For Gardner, that inner fire is what fuels every snap, every step, and every dream.
